What Inspired Us to Create DonateDevices

It all started with the Covid-19 Pandemic. School and work had been shifted online for many people due to the coronavirus. Across the nation, there were reports of students who didn’t have access to the technology necessary to keep up in school. This lack of access, coupled with the fast pace that technology is developing, would mean that there a population that is falling more and more behind in today’s society.

Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and futurist, has created what is called the Law of Accelerating Returns, which states that technology will grow exponentially. However, according to the Pew Research Center, about 25% of adults with household incomes below 30,000 dollars a year don’t own a cellphone. 43% of adults with lower incomes do not have home broadband service, while 41% do not have a computer. These technological disparities will cause low income individuals to fall behind and be placed at a massive disadvantage in a world that will become more and more technological.

While the pandemic may be coming to an end in the United States, it brought to light a dire need for increased access to technology across the nation. This inspired us to start DonateDevices, a nonprofit that is working to bridge this divide.
